The history of the Museum of Local Lore in Melitopol begins during the Civil War.
The first expositions were presented in the city library. These were archaeological and paleontological artifacts collected by local historian Serdyukov, who later became the first director of the institution.
In the period after the end of the civil war and before the start of the Great Patriotic War, at the initiative of caring citizens, the museum's funds gradually expanded. At the time of the museum's move (1927) to the walls of the city administration, its collection included over 3000 items.
With the advent of the Great Patriotic War, the museum management decided to evacuate the most valuable exhibits. But they were not destined to reach their destination.
After the liberation of the city from the Nazi army, scientists and cultural workers began to collect funds again. Part of the new collection consisted of exhibits dedicated to the defeat of the Nazis on the river. Dairy. They were presented with paintings, weapons, photographs, documents.
With the arrival of Victory, the museum already included three large exhibitions. They were dedicated to the nature of the Melitopol region, the pre-Soviet and Soviet periods in the city chronicle.
The expositions were moved to the current building in 1967. Until that moment, it housed first the Workers' Club, and then the city administration.
After the move, the Melitopol Regional Museum was replenished with new departments devoted to nature and archeology, as well as new milestones in the history of the city and the country.
In the same period, a diorama was created dedicated to the battle on the Molochnaya River in 1943.
