In Egypt found mummies with golden tongues and strange accessories

In Egypt found mummies with golden tongues and strange accessories Scientists from the University of St. Dominica have carried out planned works in a complex of 16 new burial shafts of the Temple of Taposiris Magna, near Alexandria. Here, around 280-270 BC, the city was founded by Pharaoh Ptolemy II.

Excavations in the area took several years and sometimes experts were able to find something worthwhile. In 2020, for example, mummies of people who clearly had a high social status and could give a clue to the location of Cleopatra's tomb, which has not been found so far, were found.

The new mummies belong to the Greek and Roman eras. They were poorly preserved, but had with them items that survived better. Among the artifacts lying with the mummies are golden amulets in the form of tongues that were in the mouth. Such an amulet was put to the dead so that they could talk in the otherworld.

Two of the mummies found were of particular interest. One was buried along with scrolls and a box depicting gilded ornaments with symbols of the god Osiris. The second mummy had a crown with horns and a cobra on his forehead, and a necklace with a pendant symbolizing the god Gore was on his neck.

In addition to mummies, archaeologists have found a women's burial mask with a gold wreath of leaves and 8 similar pieces of marble. It is noteworthy that all these objects were performed by professional sculptors and artists. This conclusion can be drawn on the accuracy of the transfer of facial features of deceased owners.

Scientists plan to continue excavations on the temple for the next few years in the hope of discovering the main object of the search - the tomb of the last Egyptian queen.

By the way, most recently, the Ministry of Tourism and Archaeology of Egypt reported on another unusual find - the Necropolis of Sakkara, where there were more than 100 undisclosed sarcophagi and 40 sculptural images, some of which had a gilded cover. The finds date back to the 500s BC Sarkophagi found at a depth of 12 meters in three burial wells. They were exhibited near the Step Pyramid in Sakkara.
