One of the oldest architectural monuments in Genoa is the Doge's Palace. The building was erected on the site of old houses purchased by local captains. Later, a palace with a tower was added to the building. After the first Doge settled here, the object was rebuilt many times. That is why its appearance looks eclectic and includes elements of a wide variety of architectural styles.
The palace complex includes several buildings, inside of which there are numerous galleries, picturesque courtyards, towers and bridges. Particularly impressive are the marble columns and the large staircase.
The main premises of the palace are the Great and Small Councils' Halls, a chapel, and a prison where Nikolo Paganini himself was once in custody.
Today, the building houses the museum's expositions, thematic exhibitions and various events.
Not far from the Doge's Palace is the city's main theater, Carlo Felice. It was built on the site of the monastery of St. Dominic in 1828. The object bears the name of an outstanding mayor and for 40 years was a stage for theatrical performances by Giuseppe Verdi.
Unfortunately, the building was badly damaged during the Second World War. The theater was being restored for four years. Thanks to the efforts of the famous architect Aldo of Russia, the facades of the building and some internal elements were preserved in their original form.
Today, the Carlo Felice Theater is one of the largest in Europe. Its auditorium is designed for 2000 people.
It is definitely worth mentioning the port of Genoa, which, as it once was, is an important strategic and economic object of the entire country. It stretches along the northern coast of Italy for 22 km and includes four entrances, as well as many terminals. Each of them is capable of receiving vessels of a wide variety of types and configurations. The berths are designed for mooring cargo and passenger ships, as well as private small-sized vessels.
The old part of the port has a tourist value. It houses a lighthouse, which is more than 1000 years old, one of the world's largest aquariums, the Mediterranean Sea Museum, and the Biosphere Botanical Garden. There is also a unique panoramic lift. Of interest is the three-masted frigate, which remained here on the eternal pier after the filming of the movie "Pirates".
