Palazzo Ducale is one of the most emblematic historical sites in the city of Genoa. Since 1339 the palace has been the residence of the rulers, and today it is the main center of the cultural production of the city. Art exhibitions, conferences, cycles, festivals are events that are held here all year round.
The construction of the palace began in 1298. This happened at a happy historical moment for the Republic, after the victory in the battle of Meloria against the Pisans and in Korcula against the Venetians. This is the moment when Genoa asserts itself as an economic power in the Mediterranean, undermining the other so-called maritime republics.

Webcams allow you to see the ancient architecture in real time.

An adjacent palace was included in the building, with the tower of Alberto Fieschi, which constitutes the original medieval center of the palace, still visible today in the "Torre del Popolo", also called the Grimaldina.
The tower immediately became one of the symbols of the political power of the Republic: the ringing of its bells emphasized the most solemn or dramatic moments of the city. In addition, since the 14th century, it has served as a prison for political prisoners, intellectuals, conspirators and anarchists. This continued until the 1930s: on the walls of the cells, the inscriptions left by the prisoners and even wall paintings with sailing ships and balloons are still clearly distinguishable.
The palace was later expanded. In the XIV and XV centuries. built new buildings until the current Matteotti Square was closed on four sides, becoming a real fortress. Only in the 16th century it was decided to give the palace a more modern look. The Renaissance style project was commissioned from an Italian architect and better suited the ceremoniality of the new oligarchic republics.
In 1777, after a serious fire, the palace was restored again. The architect designed the building in a neoclassical style with gilded stucco and marble, giving the rooms their current luxurious look. Various decorative elements were added in the 19th century. In the XX century. the palace underwent a major restoration, which was completed in 1991. Today it houses the headquarters of the Historical Archive of the municipality, which stores documents related to the administration of the city from the 15th to the 20th centuries.

Genoa, with real-time webcams giving you the opportunity to walk along the streets, is the largest port city in Italy, this place is rich not only in history and architecture, but also in picturesque landscapes and hidden treasures.
