Genoa, whose webcams are available on the site, is the sixth largest city in Italy.
It is the capital of the historical region called Liguria. The city is considered the most picturesque in the country. There are many attractions here. One of the most important was the Church of San Lorenzo. The Cathedral of the Genoese and the old images on the facade are overgrown with unusual legends and fascinating stories.
The religious building was built in the 11th century. Previously, there was the Basilica of the Twelve Apostles, built in the 5th - 6th centuries. The difference from the previous building was that this time it became a little larger. At the same time, over the following centuries, the cathedral expanded, acquiring solemn and precious forms. One of the relics of the cathedral is the ashes of the patron saint of the city of San Giovanni Battista, who arrived in Genoa at the end of the First Crusade.
Over time, the cathedral was moved to the center. After that, the San Lorenzo area became the heart of the city, which rapidly changed and developed. But most importantly, the churchyard throughout the Middle Ages became the main platform for political and civil life.
After the rite of illumination in 1118, the reconstruction of the building began. The building acquires the features of a Romanesque church. The reconstruction was funded by municipal taxes and military campaigns.
In 1296 there was a fire, after which the building was partially restored and rebuilt, but in Gothic architectural forms. Between 1307 and 1312 completed the luxurious façade with black and white stripes, while the interior colonnades were redone and frescoed. This building is well preserved, which is typical for Genoa. Webcams provide an opportunity to see the ancient architecture in real time.
Between the 14th and 15th centuries a new altar and chapels appeared in the cathedral. In particular, a magnificent chapel was built here, which stores the ashes of St. John the Baptist. It is considered a true masterpiece of 15th century art.
In the middle of the XVI century. by order of the city magistrates, the building was completely redesigned. True, only the covering of the naves, floors, domes and apses could be changed. The construction was finally completed only in the 17th century. At the same time, in the 19th century the building was again subjected to changes - some medieval parts were restored.
An interesting fact is that inside the cathedral there is a replica of an unexploded device, a grenade fired in 1941 by the British Navy during one of the worst attacks on Genoa, whose webcams are available on the site, during the Second World War.
