Live webcams Crotone - ancient city online

Crotone webcams, which you can watch online on this site, allow you to fully enjoy the contemplation of the ancient city. It is located on the eastern side of the Calabria region overlooking the Ionian Sea at the mouth of the Ezaro River. The height of the city is 8 m above sea level. The municipality has an area of 179.83 sq. km and has about 60.5 thousand inhabitants. The city has been the provincial capital since 1994.
Crotone has been subjected over the centuries to various foreign dominations, the influence of which is reflected in the heterogeneous style of its ancient center, characterized by narrow streets and squares overlooking noble palaces and churches. It has a temperate climate. Winters are generally mild and summers are not too hot. Precipitation mainly falls in autumn and winter.

Crotone, whose webcams make it possible to walk online through the picturesque streets, occupies a strategic position.

It is still an important point in the Mediterranean. The coast offers the traveler a wide variety of places. Here headlands and bays alternate with sandy beaches and cliffs from where you can enjoy the Ionian Sea. In winter, outdoor enthusiasts can go skiing, because there are ski resorts nearby.

The main attraction of the city of Crotone whose webcams can be viewed online on this page is the historical center.

It is easy to recognize him, because. it is located on a hill. According to archaeologists, this is where the acropolis of ancient Croton stood. It is believed that this place also housed the Temple of the Muses, where the Pythagorean school, known throughout the Mediterranean, was located.
In the center are concentrated various palaces, which are separated by narrow streets and large squares. For example, in the center is the two-story Morelli Palace (Via Risorgimento), built in the Roman neoclassical style. It has an enclosed courtyard with a patio as well as two facades. The building is decorated with various decorative elements. The arched door has pilasters on the side resting on the bases of Doric columns. The central balcony topped with a pediment rests on these elements. The rim of the building is made with jagged cornices. The current appearance of the palace was due to the reconstruction carried out in 1885 by the architect Salvatore Morelli Bianciardi on behalf of the Marquis, who at that time owned the building. At the same time, the structure itself existed approximately 100 years before that, which is confirmed by the map of Michele Cristiani in 1778.

Nearby is the Renaissance monument of the Palace of Oliverio.

There is a beautiful stone portal in it, declared a monument of historical and artistic art. On the sides of the portal are sandstone spheres, and the capitals are decorated with zoomorphic motifs. The entablature is supported by two protomes. Two equal coats of arms and an inscription have been preserved here, from which the date of construction of the building and several fragments have remained.
Byzantine walls are also of interest. They were discovered in 1994. During the research, archaeologists came across a powerful wall, consisting of ideal square blocks at the base, typical of the late ancient period. This led to the assumption that there were walls of a Greek acropolis, located by scholars precisely on the hill of the historical center, probably reused in the early medieval period and later, during the Spanish viceroyalty, included in the aforementioned houses. The presence of a medieval wall was mentioned several times during the interventions carried out on the monastery complex of Santa Chiara and in the surrounding buildings.
The construction was supposed to protect Crotone from attacks by the Goths at the final stage of the war, during which for about twenty years they fought the Byzantines, led by Emperor Justinian, for control of the peninsula. The walls allowed the inhabitants and the imperial soldiers stationed in the city to resist for several months the siege of the Gothic king Totila.
The remains of the wall were covered by two buildings, probably with two floors each. It is believed that they were destroyed after the bombing during the Second World War. The best-preserved part of the structure is the south side, which is about 11 m long. The open elevation consists of three horizontal and parallel passages of parallelepiped blocks of a fairly uniform size. They are located next to each other on layers of white solution.
It is worth noting that the Byzantine Walls are part of a popular tourist route called the Historic Center. The proposed route goes around the historical part of the city, crossing its perimeter to the top of the hill, on which stands the imposing fortress of Crotone. After that there is a descent to the sea, and the tour ends in Piazza Umberto I.

If there are no plans to visit these places yet, Crotone webcams online will allow you to plunge into the unusual atmosphere of the city.
