Kherson, whose webcams can be viewed on this site, became the first city to be built according to the "Greek project" developed by Prince Potemkin and Empress Catherine II.
The city was founded in the second half of the 18th century and got its name from the ancient Tauric Chersonesos.
One of the adornments of modern Kherson is the Naval Cathedral in the name of St. Nicholas.
This is an ancient temple located on the territory of one of the outskirts of the old city. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century on the banks of the Kosheva River. It was originally a wooden building, which was later rebuilt from stone. Since the local residents did not have money for the construction of a new building, the funds were allocated by I. A. Doroshenko, the heir of the famous hetman. The new temple was built in a classical style. It was crowned with a large round dome. A three-tiered bell tower was erected nearby. At the beginning of the 20th century, the temple was expanded with two side chapels. One of them was consecrated in honor of the Kasperovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, and the second - in the name of Seraphim of Sarov.
With the advent of Soviet power, all valuable items were taken from the church, and the bells were sent to be melted down.
After the collapse of the USSR, the temple was restored, and already in our century it received the status of a cathedral. Services are held here to this day.
Another landmark of Kherson is the Monument to the First Shipbuilders.
The monument is considered one of the symbols of the city. It was installed in the 70s of the last century on the Kherson embankment in memory of the first shipbuilders who worked at the shipyard founded by Potemkin.
By the way, the monument to the prince is decorated with one of the city squares on Komsomolskaya street. The monument was erected by order of Catherine II after the death of Grigory Alexandrovich. However, the monument was built after the death of the empress. The author of the first sketches was I.P. Martos. The granite pedestal was designed by the Italian architect F.K.Boffo. The sculpture was erected on one of the wastelands in front of the road leading to the Dnieper.
In the first half of the 19th century, acacias were planted around the monument. And some time later Potemkinsky Boulevard appeared here.
After the Bolsheviks came to power, the monument was closed and for a long time was surrounded by a tarpaulin. In the 1920s, the sculpture was dismantled and moved to the courtyard of the Historical and Archaeological Museum. A monument to Karl Marx was erected in its place. However, with the retreat of the Nazis, the sculpture of Potemkin standing in front of the museum disappeared. The monument was restored only at the beginning of the XXI century.
Today it can be seen if Kherson webcams are viewed online.
