A special place in the spiritual life of Kherson, whose webcams can be viewed on this site, are occupied by ancient and modern temples.
These include not only Orthodox shrines, but also cult objects belonging to other religions.
One of the real adornments of the city is St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral.
It was built back in the 19th century with charitable funds, on the site of a dilapidated wooden building. And, despite the difficult fate, the period of Bolshevik persecution and the Great Patriotic War, today it receives parishioners and is considered one of the most revered shrines of the Orthodox Kherson region.
The first stone church in Kherson is St. Catherine's Cathedral.
It was named after the holy great martyr, whose name the great Russian empress bore. It was Catherine the Great who initiated the development of the Kherson region and the founding of this beautiful city.
The temple is made in an interesting architectural style that has absorbed classical and at the same time antique features. It is located in the spiritual, cultural and historical heart of the city.
Among the cult sights of Kherson, it is worth noting the All Saints Church, which was built on the site of a small chapel erected in the city cemetery at the end of the 18th century. The new stone building received the features of Russian classicism, and was completed at the beginning of the 19th century. Despite numerous reconstructions and historical events, the temple managed to carry its original appearance through the centuries. Today it is an example of the ancient religious architecture of the 19th century.
Among the first temples of Kherson was the Assumption Cathedral.
Its construction was initiated by Kherson merchants. It is believed that after the start of the construction of the shrine, the smallpox epidemic stopped in the region. Believe it or not is everyone's business. However, the temple, which was erected in the 18th century, still stands today. It has two aisles. The northern one was consecrated in the name of the Great Martyr Barbara, the southern one - in honor of Nicholas the Wonderworker.
Among the most ancient churches of Kherson is the Greco-Sophia Church, which was built in the unique form of a basilica in the 18th century. The shrine was erected by the Greeks who settled here almost immediately after the foundation of the city. However, due to economic difficulties, they were forced to leave these places and the temple was rededicated to Orthodox, in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin. The appearance of the church was left unchanged.
