It bears the status of the thousandth city of Russia. It was founded on Victory Day as a working settlement during the construction of a mining and processing plant for the extraction of copper pyrite ores.
The rapid development allowed the village to receive the status of a city over the 20 years of its existence, and at the same time be included in the state register under number 1000.
The city owes its name to a birch grove that grows around a healing spring a few kilometers from the city outskirts. Here, back in the 30s of the last century, the sanatorium-resort complex "Gai" was built, in the programs of which mineral water and therapeutic mud extracted from the bottom of a small lake are widely used.

The very first exploration work took place in the vicinity of Gai in 1932.

The expedition was led by the Orenburg geologist Iosif Rudnitsky. During the wartime, work was stopped, but after the liberation of the country from the fascist invaders, the work was resumed. The first deposits of copper ore were discovered here in 1950. And already 9 years later, construction work began on the construction of an enterprise and a working settlement.
Young people and experienced employees from different parts of the USSR came to the construction site. And in a matter of months, houses and infrastructure facilities were erected here. At the same time, impact mining of ore began.
In honor of the workers of the plant, who not only helped build a new industrial center, but also participated in the liberation of the Soviet land from fascism, a memorial monument was erected in the local square. Another important monument "Glory to Labor" glorifies all those involved in the formation of a new stage in the development of the country's iron ore business. The object was installed at the plant management of Gaisky GOK.
Another monument in honor of the Great Victory was erected on the 50th anniversary of this great event at the intersection of Lenin Street and Pobeda Avenue. It is a high stele "To those who survived and conquered dead and alive", crowned with the Order of Victory, the author of which was Vladimir Petrovsky.
A similar theme corresponds to a small exposition of military equipment near the building of the local DOSAAF. Here you can see several samples of Soviet military vehicles, as well as an obelisk "Defenders of the Fatherland". It is a BTR-80 tower erected on a brick pedestal, around which a small square is laid out.
