Interesting Palermo, whose webcams are available on the site, is located on the island of Sicily.
Despite the fact that now this place belongs to Italy, not a single nationality has left its mark here. Among those who once owned this land, for example, Greeks, Normans, Phoenicians and even Arabs.
Undoubtedly, this left its mark on the architectural and cultural appearance of Palermo. But now I want to talk about the most unusual place on this island - the Capuchin Catacombs. In short, it is a burial underground room, in which the remains of more than 8 thousand people are located.
The catacombs have been located in the basement of the monastery of the Capuchin Fathers since 1599. The galleries that make it up form a large rectangular cemetery. Since 1601, given the large number of corpses that arrived here, the numerous requests of the nobles who wanted to be buried in this place pushed the monks to increase the burial.
Now there are about 8,000 stuffed corpses, divided by sex, social category and profession. The first to be buried in the catacombs was the monk Silvestro de Gubbio. This happened on October 16, 1599. The most recent burial dates back to 1920 and belongs to Rosalia Lombardo, a two-year-old girl who was placed in a crystal coffin and became a symbol of the catacombs.
What strikes visitors the most is the method used by the monks to preserve corpses. So people were brought into the room, laid on a grate of terracotta pipes, and the doors were hermetically closed. The bodies remained there for about a year. Then they were transported to a ventilated place covered with a canopy. Here they were washed and cleaned with water and vinegar, and then closed and placed in wooden boxes or niches along the corridors. The remains were only left there if relatives came to visit and brought them wax for three consecutive years, otherwise they were removed. It is worth noting that in these catacombs there are the remains of many ancestors of the inhabitants of Palermo, whose webcams allow you to walk around the city online. Their descendants often visit the dead.
Unusual Palermo may be of interest to many travelers, this city is incredibly atmospheric, real-time webcams can convey a piece of this spirit.
