The history of Odessa began with the 5th century BC, at that time there were already some settlements here. In 1794, the Russian Empire laid the foundation for the development of today's regional center. A strategic naval harbor was established on the territory of the Tatar-Turkish town of Hadjibey. It became part of the huge All-Russian Empire in 1791. The city received its current name "Odessa" in 1795. By the 20th century, the port became the second largest city in Russia in terms of cargo turnover.
The bustling port city got its catchy name from the ancient Greek settlement of Odessos. It was assumed that it was located near the picturesque Odessa Bay. Later, scientists discovered this settlement near the Bulgarian city of Varna. In the 18th century, it was customary to give Greek names to settlements in territories recaptured from the Turks. These are, for example, the names: Tiraspol, Sevastopol, and some others. The names of the cities were not necessarily chosen according to their location. The main thing is that the name should be ancient — for example, Kherson.
In the water area of the Odessa Bay, modern Odessa-beauty, there was an ancient Greek settlement. Archaeologists have discovered its ruins under the Primorsky Boulevard. In ancient times, the coastline passed far beyond the Odessa lighthouse. At that time, the water level in the Black Sea was much lower. Ancient Greek objects are still found near and behind the lighthouse.

The Tendrov spit stretched much further than today, due to the low level of the Black Sea. This allowed the settlers in the area of the Odessa lighthouse to completely control the mouth of the Dnieper, the Bug, and the Black Sea. The settlement received a favorable geopolitical location.
Unusual archaeological finds have fully confirmed the relationship between the entire eastern Mediterranean and the Odessa region. In the Middle Ages, the lands of Odessa came under the control of the Crimean Khanate, the Golden Horde, or the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Nomadic tribes of the Polovtsians and Pechenegs tried to seize these lands.
