The history of Odessa dates back to the 5th century BC, at that time there were already some settlements here. In 1794, the Russian Empire laid the foundation for the development of today's regional center. A strategic naval harbor was founded on the territory of the Tatar-Turkish town of Khadzhibey. It became part of the huge All-Russian Empire back in 1791. The city received its current name "Odessa" in 1795. By the 20th century, the port had become the second largest city in terms of cargo turnover, the fourth largest city in Russia.
The lively port city got its catchy name from the ancient Greek settlement of Odessos. It was assumed that it was located near the picturesque Odessa Bay. Later, scientists discovered this settlement near the Bulgarian city of Varna. In the 18th century, there was a custom to give Greek names to settlements in territories conquered from the Turks. These are, for example, the names: Tiraspol, Sevastopol and some others. The names of the cities were chosen not necessarily by location. The main thing is that the name should be antique - for example, Kherson.
An ancient Greek settlement was located in the waters of the Odessa Bay, modern Odessa-beauty. Archaeologists have discovered its ruins under Primorsky Boulevard. In ancient times, the coastline passed far beyond the Odessa lighthouse. The then water level in the Black Sea was much lower. Ancient Greek objects are still found near and behind the lighthouse.
The Tendra Spit stretched much further than today, due to the low level of the Black Sea. This allowed the settlers in the zone of the Odessa lighthouse to completely control the estuaries of the Dnieper, Bug, and the Black Sea. The settlement has received a favorable geopolitical location.
Unusual archaeological finds have fully confirmed the relationship between the entire eastern Mediterranean and the Odessa region. In the Middle Ages, the lands of Odessa came under the control of the Crimean Khanate, the Golden Horde, or the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The nomadic tribes of the Polovtsians and Pechenegs tried to seize these lands.
