The history of Deribasovskaya street in Odessa
The street did not acquire the name in honor of the founder of the city immediately. The original name - Gymnaz (in some sources Gymnasium) was dedicated to the only gymnasium located here, which later became the Richelieu Lyceum.
In former times, across the street, dividing it, there was a descent - Voennaya gully, which led towards the military harbor. On the street, later named Deribasovskaya, a bridge was built, which separated the street. Lanzheronovskaya from Greek square. However, due to the shallow depth, the beam was filled up, and the bridge was dismantled as unnecessary. Deribasovskaya street was named in 1811, but since the name is derived from a foreign surname, various options periodically arose: Ribasovskaya, de Ribasovskaya or d'Ribasovskaya.
In the 1920s, the street was named after Lassalle, an activist of the German workers' union. In 1938, Chkalov died, which prompted to rename the Odessa street again, dedicating a new name to the pilot. But already in 1941, with the establishment of the Romanian administration, the street again became known as Deribasovskaya.
In our time, st. Deribasovskaya is a must-see place for tourists; locals also like to relax here. In the 1980s, traffic on most of the street was banned, which also contributed to the creation of a special recreation area here. Since then, residents of Odessa and guests of the city have been walking along the pedestrian part of the street every day, here you can visit various restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and listen to the Odessa dialect. Deribasovskaya street is paved with paving stones. Since there was not enough stone during the construction of the city, materials were used brought by ships, including from Naples, the birthplace of the founder of the city, Joseph Deribas.
