Puerto de La Cruz is the oldest resort on the island of Tenerife, part of the Canary archipelago. While the southern resorts suffer from heat and dry air, Puerto de La Cruz is surrounded by greenery, freshness and coolness. Despite the fact that the ocean in this part of the island is quite rough and is suitable mainly for surfing, water procedures are also available to vacationers in the resort of Puerto de la Cruz. So, in the vicinity of the resort there is a wonderful complex of swimming pools (artificial lakes) filled with sea water. In addition to lakes, there are specially equipped islands for sunbathing, stunning fountains, picturesque gardens where representatives of the local flora grow. The complex is located right on the top of the cliff, from where amazing panoramas of the resort open.
Lago Martianez was designed by the local architect Cesar Manrique, whose hand has many ingenious projects in the Canary Islands. The architect managed to assemble many man-made objects in the middle of the picturesque nature, organically fitting them into the environment. In addition to water activities, a casino, a restaurant, and bars have been built on the territory of the complex. In the evening, this place takes on a special splendor in the light of night illumination. It is noteworthy that swimming here is available until dark, after which you can admire the magic lights to your heart's content.
Those who prefer natural beaches will be delighted by the main city beach, Jardin. It is a deep natural bay, which, although it is fenced off from the main ocean area, still has high waves. The coast at the water's edge is strewn with black volcanic sand, from which you can build bizarre, mystical castles. It is noteworthy that in the northern part of the island, the sand has a darker shade than in the south. The reason for this is the closer location of the beach in relation to the volcano, as well as the absence of African winds, which, according to the expert version, brought golden sand to the beaches of the southern resorts of Tenerife.
Here, near Playa Jardin, the remains of an ancient fortification, which the Spaniards erected to repel pirate attacks, have survived to this day.
Other attractions in Puerto de La Cruz include the church square, located in the historic heart of the city. The main entrance of the old cathedral, built in the 17th century, opens onto it. The interior of the church is adorned with a skillful iconostasis. Outside, the building surrounds a park of amazing beauty with flower beds, exotic flowers, and playgrounds. The highlight of the square's ensemble is an unusual fountain, near which guests and residents of Puerto de La Cruz love to relax.
