The temple was erected in the place where the old powder chamber had previously stood. The work was carried out for about seven years. After their completion, a huge and incredibly beautiful iconostasis was made inside. Apparently, some violations were made during the construction, so in winter it snowed inside, and in summer birds were frequent guests. Also repeatedly strong wind damaged the dome. All this threatened to spoil the structure as a whole. Therefore, many attempts were made to repair the Ryazan Cathedral, but they could only be crowned with success at the beginning of the 19th century.

With the advent of Soviet power, the religious building was closed. A planetarium was organized within its walls, and after some time exhibitions began to be exhibited. Divine services began to be held only in the 1990s, while expositions were placed here until 2007.
As for architecture, the cathedral was made in the style of Moscow or Naryshkin baroque with a focus on European features. Yakov Bukhvostovy tried to combine the traditional temple architecture of Russia with straight cornices and symmetrical facades, which were typical for Europe at the end of the 17th century. The exterior of the building is interesting. It is decorated with white-stone carvings with lace, the width of which in some places reaches almost 3 m. The belfry also has unusual elements in the form of columns and sculptures of angels.
You can not ignore the iconostasis. This is a unique work of art that reaches a height of 27 m. It consists of eight tiers, of which seven are main and one is additional. The latter includes a cross and icons depicting the Passion of Christ. Icons were painted by Nikolai Solomonov and his students. The woodcarving that edging the canvases was done by hand by craftsmen from the artel of Khristoforov. It should be noted separately that the carving was done in the same style with the ornaments on the facade.
