Kupchino is the southern edge of St. Petersburg is the Neva lowland, on the middle reaches of the river Volkovka. He is currently one of the largest residential districts of St. Petersburg. Kupchino is the main component of the Frunze district. To the North adjoins a residential district Volkovo, on the West and East respectively with Moscow and Nevsky districts, in the South limited by the line of the circular railway. Prior to development the area was covered with shrub vegetation, swamps and partly coniferous forests. In the development of the forests were cut down, swamps drained, fields were formed, suitable for haymaking and other agricultural activities. Since the beginning of the XVI century, the area called "Galeev island", which is a modern Kupchino, known as a part belonging to the Novgorod vodskaya Pyatina. Also known by names: the "Izhora land", "Ingram", at a later time, the territory is called Ingermanland. From 1617 the territory belongs to Sweden. One of the first mentions of the village is found in Swedish census books of 1619. In 1702, during the Northern war the territory again became part of Russia. In XVIII-XIX centuries Kupchino – breech village composed of Ingermanland, then – St.-Petersburg province. In the early twentieth century to the North of the village is formed village of Romanovo, and subsequently Ryleevo. In the 1930-ies the territory of the Kazanskaya part of the city limits as part of Volodarsky, and then the Moscow district. The city boundary runs along Kurakina road. During the great Patriotic war, the villagers of Kupchino was evacuated, and the place of the village and surrounding areas erected fortifications. Therefore Kupchino is in the territory of the Leningrad blockade. After the war Kupchino was restored, but the pre-war size is not reached. In 1964 began the period of mass housing construction. A detailed project plan was developed under the direction of architects A. Naumov and D. Goldgar. In 1972 opened metro station "Kupchino". Since the mid 1990-ies till the present time in Kupchino is pursuing an active densification.
