Feodosia is an old resort town on the southeastern coast of sunny Crimea. The history of Feodosia begins in the 6th century BC. And the name of the city is translated as "given by God." The beauty of the local nature and the abundance of historical, cultural and architectural monuments attract thousands of tourists to this city. Clean beaches combined with fresh air and warm weather will give you not only a pleasant stay, but also health.
One of the oldest landmarks of Feodosia is the remains of the Genoese fortress Kafa. This is how the city was called in the Middle Ages. The fortress was erected to defend these lands from enemy attacks. The size of the territory protected by the fortress reached 70 hectares. And the height of the fortress walls was 11 m. During the reign of these lands by the Genoese, the Feodosia fortress was one of the largest of its kind in the whole of Europe. In addition to the solid walls, access to the city was difficult due to the wide moat.
In the XIV century, the fortress repelled the siege of the Golden Horde. But Khan Janibek took the city by cunning. He ordered to catapult the bodies of his soldiers, who died from the raging plague, outside the fortress walls. Therefore, the Genoese were forced to suddenly leave the city.
The structure was erected from marbled limestone. The complex of fortifications included a consular castle, a large number of towers, warehouses, a courthouse, an episcopal residence, workshops and shops.
The fortress performed its defensive functions until the 18th century, after which it fell into decay and was practically dismantled into stones. Only small echoes of the former scale have survived to this day. Today you can see the remains of the citadel and several towers.
Feodosia is the birthplace of the world famous marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky, who became famous in his youth. In 1845, the artist founded the first art gallery, which displayed about 50 paintings. The original exhibition was located in the artist's house. And in 1880, the construction of a separate gallery was completed, in which Ivan Konstantinovich left the richest cultural heritage - the world's largest collection of his works.
Today you can see 417 paintings by Aivazovsky here. A monument to the artist rises at the entrance to the museum.
By visiting the gallery, you can learn about the life and development of the master, see his personal belongings, as well as documents and photographs. The total number of museum storage units is 11 thousand.
