Feodosia was founded in the 6th century BC. In the Middle Ages, these lands were ruled by immigrants from Genoa. From that period to the present day, the remains of a Genoese fortress have been preserved, the territory of which at the time of the Genoese occupied 70 hectares. Among the surviving fragments is the Konstantinovskaya Tower. It was named after the Byzantine emperor Constantine, who legalized Christianity. The remains of the 4-sided tower today have only 3 walls. According to some assumptions, the 4th wall was destroyed by time and winds. Others confidently declare that it did not exist at all. According to this version, such a decision was created so that the defenders of the fortress, in the event of a breakthrough in the defense, could quickly leave the city. In addition to defensive functions, the structure served as a storage facility for ammunition and weapons. Therefore, the second name of the tower is Arsenalnaya. The second surviving tower of the Genoese fortress is named after Thomas. The fragment is located on the Mithridates hill, the name of which was given by the famous marine painter Aivazovsky, who was born in Feodosia. The artist decided to name the hill, similarly to the mountain of the same name in Kerch, which, in turn, was named after the Pontic king Mithridates IV Eupator. The tower itself, built in the XIV century, bears the name of one of the 12 apostles of Christ. She had three tiers, and, like Konstantinovskaya, served as an arsenal and food storage. According to the plan, the stronghold had a square outline. Only picturesque ruins have survived from an important strategic object to this day. Nearby are the remains of a semicircular escarpment that protected the approaches to the structure. The thick walls of the object, made of marbled limestone, indicate its former power. There, on the Mithridates Hill, is the foundation of the first Museum of Antiquities. Now this institution, founded in 1811 and considered the oldest museum in the country, is located on Aivazovsky Avenue. Within its walls you can see unique artifacts dating back to various periods of the city's history, from the times of the ancient Greeks who founded Feodosia to the middle of the 20th century. The museum's collections include ancient Greek dishes, Genoese coins, weapons and household items. It also stores samples of flora and fauna collected from the territory of the Karadag massif and the Black Sea. Particular attention is paid to the collection of exhibits from the times of the Great Patriotic War. Of interest are also ancient gravestones, sculptures and architectural elements.
