Gabrovo is a city in central northern Bulgaria.
Once an industrial city, where most of the Bulgarian textiles, carpets and clothes were produced, Gabrovo was transformed after the fall of communism and became popular among tourists thanks to comfortable hotels, shops, cafes and quick access to many local attractions and entertainment.
This city has two museums, several historical churches, monuments and bridges across the Yantra River, which are attracted by tourists. Recently, Gabrovo has won one of the largest awards in the national opinion poll “The Best City of Bulgaria”. The city won the “Greenest City” nomination and took second place in the audience competition.
Gabrovo was at first a community that used the Yantra River as an energy source for mills and water wheels. Due to this, Gabrovo is the longest city in Bulgaria, because it stretched along the river, the source of which is in the north of the Balkan Mountains.
The city is located in the continental climate zone, near the Balkan Mountains and far from the Black Sea. Summer in Gabrovo is hot, and winters are cold and snowy, which is why the local ski resort in the Uzana area is flourishing. In this part of Bulgaria all seasons are pronounced, although the spring is short and falls mainly in April. The average annual temperature in summer is –27C, in winter –4C.
Gabrovo offers an abundance of shopping opportunities, including the Gabrovo Central Department Store (south of the city center), Terra Mall (about 1 km north-west of the city center), Technopolis (about 3 km north-west of the city center) and Bill Supermarket (northeast of the city center about 1 km). In addition, there are many shops selling souvenirs, clothes, shoes, books and numerous Bulgarian grocery stores.
Gabrovo has many taxis, minibuses, 11 bus lines, 4 trolleybus lines and 5 minibus lines. All of them carry passengers around the city quickly and cheaply. The city government building, cultural center, library, theater, city bazaar, several restaurants, bars, shops, hotels and both museums are in sufficient proximity to the center and within walking distance from each other.
If you want to get from one place to another, you can use public transport, which consists of 30 bus routes. The cost of a ticket for one route is 1 Bulgarian lev. Thanks to municipal passenger transport in Gabrovo, you can get to anywhere in the city.
