They were intended for soldiers who helped tend the garden in their spare time.
At the beginning of the XX century. a scientific station was created here, which became the basis for various studies. Plants from all over the world were brought in for experiments.

In 1972, the botanical garden in Sukhum, whose webcams will plunge into the atmosphere of the subtropics, became a Scientific Research Institute.

A couple of years later, the Subtropical Arboretum entered its structure. This is a unique place, which is known far beyond the borders of Abkhazia. The area of ​​the park is 56 hectares, and the collection includes about five hundred species of plants.
After the war, the garden was transformed into the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia. 4 directions were opened here: flora and vegetation, introduction of plants, dendrology and floriculture. The garden has repeatedly participated in international exhibitions in Germany, the Czech Republic, Moscow, St. Petersburg.
Now scientific research is being developed here, educational and educational projects are being carried out. Every year, employees make expeditions throughout the country to inspect and find new types of native plants.
