The City Of Ternopilit is the administrative,economic and cultural center of Ternopil region. It is located in the Central part of the Western region
Ukraineat the Seret river. The city is intersected by a large number of highways and Railways and tourist routes in Western Ukraine. This city sung in songs and legends, its unique atmosphere and beauty can surprise even experienced travelers. Ternopil begins its existence with a huge fortress that was built by Jan Amor Tarnowski in 1540, a Royal resolution of the Polish ruler Sigismund I. Earlier this land was an ancient Russian fortress, destroyed by the Tatar-Mongols. About the times of the ancient state in these lands silently testify the walls of the Church of the exaltation of the Holy cross, built in the early XVI century, and preserved to our days. Another old Church of the Nativity, which also pleases the eyes of contemporary residents and guests of Ternopil was built in the early XVII century. Thanks to its favorable geographical position – Ternopil was at the crossroads of trade routes, therefore quickly developed and grew in size. Over its long and turbulent history, the city managed to visit a part of Austria, Russia, then Austria, Austro-Hungary and Poland. During the Second World war, Ternopil was in the power of the Soviet Union, but was occupied by Nazi troops from July 1941 until the spring of 1944. From the very beginning to year of the liberation from Nazi Germany by the red army, the city was called Tarnopol, in honor of the name of its owner-founder. Modern Ternopil has more than two hundred thousand inhabitants, a large number of
cultural institutions,
parksmuseums, monuments and
entertainment centers. In the city there are several television channels and radio stations, supermarkets and shopping malls, chic restaurants and themed cafes, as well as many resorts and hotels. As mentioned above, in Ternopil there are many Church buildings. The majority of the population, Greek Catholics, followed by the number of parishioners is the Orthodox Church. Also in Ternopil are Roman Catholic churches, Protestant, pagan and Jewish communities.
