The Greek city of Kalamata, located in the South of the Peloponnese, is the capital of Messinia, known for its fertile land since ancient times. Today, as many years ago, everywhere olive trees, which ripen the best olives in Greece. There is even a sort of dark olives, called "Kalamata". Of course, the best olives are getting the best olive oil, the excellent consumer qualities of which are appreciated not only in Greece but throughout the world. If the jar with olive oil says "Kalamata, Greece" — then you have in your hands the highest quality product.
Like most Greek cities, Kalamata's rich history: during its existence it managed to get in the hands of the Spartans, francs, Byzantines, Venetians and Turks. And only in the early nineteenth century Kalamata one of the first cities became part of the new state of independent Greece.
Despite the fact that Kalamata is relatively small – less than 60 thousand inhabitants — it has its own international airport, recently experiencing a rise in connection with the development of tourism in the Peloponnese.
