Kalamata has an ancient history, the countdown which began even in Homeric times, when the city was called Pharez. From XIII century the city was captured by the Franks, who built a fortress here and began the development of the city. In 1459 the city was captured by the Venetians and in 1715 it was under Turkish rule. Greek militia managed to free the city from the Turkish aggressor in 1821

When the city came under Greek influence there began to develop the agricultural industry in the late nineteenth century began the construction of the port. In 1986, Kalamata felt two strong earthquakes that destroyed the city and claimed many lives of citizens. Today the economy in Kalamata is based on the processing of agricultural products: olives, olive oil, figs, raisins and other agricultural products.
