The Bay washes the southern coast of Messenia and the southwestern coast of the Mani Peninsula in Laconia. At the Western border of the Bay is the island of Venetico and the South-East the Bay is bordered by Cape Tenaron (Matapuna). The West coast is low and has fertile agricultural lands, which are part of Amisos plains surrounding the Northern part of the same river. Eastern shore occupy the southern foothills of Taygetos, relatively rocky, inaccessible for climbing, in many places with steep cliffs to the sea and with only a few settlements.
The Northern part is relatively densely populated with the cities of Kalamata and Messene, on the Western side there are many sandy beaches attracting tourists. In the North-Eastern shore of the Bay of Kalamata; near him in the Bay empties into the river Pamisus. Also on the shores of the Bay many beach resorts.
