Live camera broadcasts a view of Kirov Square in the city of Sortavala. Sortavala is a small but very cozy town in Karelia. It is located on the shores of Lake Läppäjärvi and has a rich history. Sortavala is especially popular among tourists: an old center with Finnish houses has been preserved here, there are interesting museums, authentic cafes and a picturesque view of the lake.
In addition, a trip to Sortavala is an excellent opportunity to visit the famous Ruskeala Mountain Park with the Marble Canyon, Akhvenkoski waterfalls and other natural attractions.
The past of the city is inextricably linked with the ancient settlement on Mount Paaso, which is located about 4.5 km from Sortavala. It is believed that the Karelians lived there already in the 12-13th centuries, as evidenced by archaeological exhibits.
- The first written mentions of the Sortevala settlement date back to the end of the 15th century - the source was the Russian-Swedish border agreement.
- In 1617, this territory became the property of Sweden, and in 1646 the settlement turned into a city called Sordavalla.
- After the signing of the Nishtadt Peace Treaty in 1721, Sordavalla, together with the territory of western Karelia, passed into the power of Russia. Then the city received a new name - Serdobol, and became part of the Vyborg province.
- In the 18th century, during the Northern War, many houses were destroyed, but from the 19th century, the city began to develop actively: factories, seminaries, schools, etc. were opened.
- From 1918 to 1940, Sortavala was part of independent Finland.
- After the end of the war in 1940, the city became part of the Karelo-Finnish SSR. Then the Sortavala region was formed.
- During the period of hostilities from 1941 to 1944, Sortavala was controlled by the Finns, but after the end of the Soviet-Finnish war, the city again became part of the USSR.
- Since 1990, Sortavala has the status of a historical city of Russia. Today it is of great tourist importance: travelers come here to walk around the beautiful center, visit museums, admire the scenery and relax in nature.
