The city of Segezha, whose webcams can be viewed online on this site, was named after the river on the banks of which it is located.
It is noteworthy that the name of this, translated from the language of the indigenous peoples, means "light" or "clean".
The first inhabitants of these places were the Sami. This people had Finno-Ugric roots and lived here until the 12th century, when Russians and Karelians appeared on the territory of today's Segezha.
At the end of the 17th century, a monastery and several sketes appeared in Segezha. Later, at the beginning of the 19th century, the Vygozerskaya volost appeared on the territory of the modern city, which included three peasant communities.
After the Segezha railway station appeared on the Murom branch, the Segezha district was also formed.
An important moment in the urban chronicle was the construction of the White Sea Canal. More precisely, not the construction of the water artery itself, but the flooding of the village of Maiguba adjacent to Segezha. At that moment, the timber processing enterprise was moved to Segezha. And after that, the first residential quarters for workers began to appear next to the plant. In the same period, a wood-and-paper plant (or a pulp and paper mill later) was opened. The enterprise played an important role in the formation of the village and its obtaining the status of a city.
Today, along with the Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill, which produces over 400 thousand tons of pulp, as well as about the same amount of wrapping paper and paper bags, the city has several significant attractions.
So, for example, on one of the streets of Segezha is the Trinity Church. Its height is impressive. The temple, reaching a height of 30 meters, accommodates about 450 parishioners.
The shrine began to be erected already in our century and consecrated in the name of the icon of the Mother of God and the Holy Life-Giving Trinity.
An important object is also the Military Memorial with a mass grave and several monuments. The remains of the heroes of the Second World War, as well as civilian workers who died during the defense of the station in 1919, are buried here.
Another place where the history of the city is kept is the Museum Center. It was opened on the eve of the "Millennium" on the basis of the local history museum. Today, it contains quite a few valuable artifacts that tell about the history of the city and nearby settlements.
And, of course, one should not forget about the hallmark of Segezha - the natural monument of the Voitsky Padun, which also deserves the attention of travelers.
For those who have not yet been able to visit Karelia, it is recommended to watch Segezha webcams online.
