The castle was built in 1329 under King Robert of Anjou. Then the Spanish viceroy Pedro Alvarez de Toledo rebuilt the fortress, making it more protected from the sea. Sant'Elomo Castle has a star-shaped plan and six ramparts. The castle is known for the historic uprising led by Mazanello in 1647, when its walls served as a hideout for the Spanish viceroy. The fortress of Sant Elmo also became a symbol of the Naples Republic in 1799.
