Many have heard of the Vesuvius volcano near Naples, but few people know about another volcanic zone, Campo Flegrei, located on the other side of the metropolis.
The name comes from the Greek "flego", meaning the name can be translated as "fire or burning fields." It is a large volcanic basin, the diameter of which at rest is about 12 - 15 km. Here you can see numerous craters and volcanic structures, from where sometimes breaks out caustic sulfur gas or water vapor.
Campi Flegrei is characterized by a unique natural phenomenon - bradysme. It is a "slow earthquake" when the soil fluctuates, but very slowly, then rising, then descending.
The Flegrean fields include several archaeological areas, including Pozzuoli (Serapis Sanctuary and Grand Amphitheatre), Baya (a popular Roman resort, now the Bho bayi Thermal Archaeological Park and the Campi Flegrei Archaeological Museum in Baya Castle), Solfatara Volcano, Bacoli (Piscina Mirabilis and Cento Camerelle) and Kuma (Archaeological Park, Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Sybil).
