Cuneo, whose webcams are available on the site, is located in a picturesque place among the forest and mountains.
In this Italian town, a Piedmontese tradition is widespread in a cafe, when in a spacious hall you can drink coffee with local sweets - meringues and chocolates with rum.
The history of the city is long, but the most important events take place starting from the 19th century. April 28, 1796, according to the Cherasco Convention, Cuneo received an order to transfer the city to the French. However, during the siege of 1799, the new invaders had to abandon it in favor of the Austro-Russians, who came in support of Savoy. The French will finally return to the city on June 27, 1800 and destroy the mighty and famous walls that have resisted so many sieges for centuries.
In 1814, the Savoy dynasty regained control over the territories of Cuneo, and in 1817, a bishopric was finally established here.
Thus began a very prosperous period for the city, especially in the field of education. After the opening of the first Catholic kindergarten in 1846, elementary schools were expanded thanks to the municipal administration, which appointed and paid its own teachers. During these years, the first technical school was also opened. In the 19th century markets flourish in Cuneo, especially those associated with cocoons, chestnuts, and later with Piedmontese cattle. All this revives the economy and contributes to the development of the banking system.
At the beginning of the XX century. during the First World War, about 400 people died in the city, and more than 200 were injured. As for political life, these years went down in history as liberal. Cuneo has already established himself at the national level with such important figures as Giovanni Giolitti, Marcello Soleri and Tancredi Galimberti.
In the 1920s, cultural changes also took place. A period of rationalist architecture began, which characterized the urban designs of the city. In 1921, work also began on the construction of a large 768-meter viaduct across the Stura River with its 34 arches and a maximum height of 50 meters.
On June 10, 1940, Cuneo, whose webcams allow you to enjoy the landscapes online, was invaded by thousands of recruits. The Second World War brought many residents to the front. The day after the fall of Mussolini, on July 25, 1943, the anti-fascist Duccio Galimberti called on the people of Cuneo to go to war against the Germans. The townspeople responded to this call and became active volunteers in the guerrilla war.
September 12, 1943 German tanks entered the city. The Fascists killed Galimberti and burned the commune of Boves. These events were the most tragic episodes of the German occupation, which lasted until April 1945. For civilian casualties and for his activity in the partisan struggle, Cuneo was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor on August 1, 1947.
