Cuneo, whose webcams are available on the site, stands on a high foothill plain.
It has been eroded over the millennia by the Stura di Demonte River and the Gesso Stream. They gave the area a distinctive look that inspired the choice of the city's name.
"Pizzo di Cuneo" first appears in documents on June 23, 1198. The city was formed as a result of the exodus of lands and places falling under the nowhere recognized jurisdiction of the Marquis of Saluzzo. Its inhabitants had to consider the defensive aspect as the main necessity from the moment of foundation. The place is in fact clearly suitable for defense: solid walls and doors connected by a large moat.
The life of the new municipality begins with difficulties, especially because of the former lord, the Marquis of Saluzzo. He does not want to lose power over his subjects, and after an agreement with the city of Asti, he returns to exercise his dominance over these lands. In 1231, thanks to the help of Milan, the city was rebuilt. Seven years later, in 1238, Emperor Frederick II, who came to Cuneo to welcome his submission, granted protection to the revived municipality.
With the death of Frederick II in 1250, the defense of the empire became more and more distant. As a result, the municipality suffered from Asti's hegemony. In search of a powerful man who could be entrusted with their protection, the inhabitants of Cuneo in 1259 ask Charles I of Anjou, Count of Provence, who a few years later became King of Naples, to take the city under protection. Angevin domination lasts for more than a century, during which the city grows and strengthens.
On April 10, 1382, Cuneo, whose webcams allow you to walk around the city online, joined the ranks of the Savoy lands with the act of consecration of Amedeo VI of Savoy, the Green Count, and received an obligation to return his vast area, which literally collapsed at the end of the Angevin period.
Under the Savoy state, Cuneo closes again, becoming in the middle of the XVIII century. practically a fortified city. In 1559, Duke Emanuele Filiberto granted Cuneo the status of a city for military merit. Until the 1700s, a deep and irreversible transformation of religious architecture took place. It largely determined the modern look that was formed in the Baroque style.
Despite the fact that Cuneo took on the role of a walled city, he did not refuse to adapt to new technical and economic trends and became the center of production and export, webcams allow you to enjoy picturesque architecture online.
