Yaroslavl land has long been rich in a huge number of spiritual centers and Orthodox objects. One of these is the Tolga Monastery. According to legend, the shrine was erected in honor of finding the Tolga icon of the Mother of God near the banks of the Volga. The face was seen by Bishop Prokhor of Rostov, who consecrated the future temple. It is this event, dating back to 1314, that is considered the beginning of the history of the Tolga Monastery.
The long history of the temple allowed the local walls to see many outstanding events. Great Russian autocrats came here - Ivan the Terrible, Catherine II, Nicholas II. I saw the monastery and many tragic events, including the Polish intervention, the pestilence of the middle of the 17th century, as well as the desolation of the Soviet period, the Great Patriotic War.
The monastery found its second life in 1987. At the same time, the monastery was retrained from male to female. Today the monastery complex is included in the list of cultural heritage sites.
An interesting cult object is the Church of the Sign. It was built in the Vlasiev tower, which was once part of the Yaroslavl fortress, which in the 16th century surrounded the heart of Yaroslavl.
The tower played the role of a gate. And during its construction, an icon of the Mother of God of the Sign was painted on the wall. Later, a small chapel was built on top of the tower in honor of the icon. That is why the object is often called the Church of the Sign.
You should definitely see the Kazan Convent, which appeared in honor of breaking the siege of the Polish invaders. The battle lasted 24 days, and the Kazan Mother of God was considered the main intercessor of the Russian soldiers, the icon of which was brought to Yaroslavl that year.
Initially, a temple was built, to which more than 70 cells were later added.
At the beginning of the last century, 400 nuns lived on the territory of the monastery. There were workshops here. And the local choir was known far beyond the city limits.
The coup d'état of 1917 divided the life of the monastery into "before" and "after". It was turned into a concentration camp and warehouse. And temples and other buildings quickly fell into disrepair. The main shrine was also stolen - the icon of the Mother of God, whose fate is unknown to this day.
The monastery, like other places of worship in the country, began to be restored in the 90s. Today the monastery is active again.
If it is not possible to visit these places in person, Yaroslavl webcams will allow you to plunge into the indescribable atmosphere of this city online.
