Most of the sights of Vologda, whose webcams can be viewed online on this site, are occupied by religious objects.
The main cathedral of the city, the Resurrection Cathedral, was built in the second half of the 18th century. It was intended for holding services in the cold season. In the warm months, the main function was performed by the St. Sophia Cathedral, which is also located on the territory of the Vologda Kremlin.
The building of the cathedral has a Baroque style. Its massive walls are painted in warm colors and topped with a massive main dome and four small cupolas. Thanks to the pilasters and columns of the Tuscan order, the building looks original and solemn.
Within the walls of the Resurrection Cathedral, the miraculous icon of the Zyryanskaya Trinity is kept, which, according to some sources, was created in the 16th century. The uniqueness of the image lies in the ancient inscription in the Komi-Zyryan language.
The second most important Hagia Sophia was built during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, simultaneously with the Vologda citadel. The Assumption Cathedral in the capital served as the prototype of the building. The snow-white walls of the temple are crowned with five dark onion-shaped domes. Inside the building, you can see ancient frescoes with biblical scenes that were painted at the end of the 17th century. The temple is active, but services are held only on major holidays.
Another significant cult object of Vologda is the Spaso-Prilutsky Dmitriev Monastery.
This is one of the largest monasteries in the Vologda region and the entire northern part of Russia. The founder of the monastery in the XIV century was Dmitry Prilutsky, a follower of Sergius of Radonezh. Unfortunately, there are many dark spots in the fate of the monastery. One of them is the Soviet period of history, when the walls of the monastery were plundered, and the monks and novices were repressed. Alternately, the complex housed a cinema, and then a prison and military depots.
After the collapse of the USSR, the monastery was returned to believers. Today, a museum operates on the territory of the monastery complex. The main historical sites are the Cathedral of the Savior, the Vvedenskaya Church, the refectory, cells and ancient storerooms. The oldest example of wooden cult architecture is the tented Assumption Church.
The monastery rises above the river bank, surrounded by picturesque nature. Therefore, it will be pleasant to walk here even for those who adhere to atheistic views.
For those who have not yet reached these places, Vologda webcams, which can be watched in real time, will allow you to enjoy the beautiful views of this picturesque city.
