Volgograd, whose webcams can be viewed online on this site, went down in history forever under the name of Stalingrad.
After all, it was this hero city that broke the plans of Nazi Germany to seize the Soviet Union. The memorial complex of Mamayev Kurgan became a reminder of those terrible 200 days during which the fierce Battle of Stalingrad continued. Literally every meter of land here is saturated with blood, and the spirit of the heroic glory of the soldiers who defended the city is still in the air.
The Mamaev Kurgan ensemble includes several outstanding monuments at once.
The most famous of them is the giant sculpture of the Motherland. It was erected on the highest point of Mamaev Kurgan and is not only the compositional center of the entire complex, but also a symbol of the whole country. The sculptural appearance of the Motherland is represented by a female figure, who holds a huge sword in her right hand raised, and with her free hand, laid back, she seems to call the soldiers behind to attack. On the face of the Motherland, that very “noble rage” is displayed, which boiled up like a wave and crushed fascism on our land.
Sculpture "Motherland is calling!" became the most complex object from an engineering point of view.
Despite the fact that the monument is not monolithic, but hollow inside, its weight reaches 8000 tons. The height of the sculpture, together with the sword, is 85 meters. And the length of a 14-ton sword is 33 meters. The structure is protected from destruction by 116 steel ropes that tighten all parts from the inside. And the vibrations of the sword are constantly monitored by a special sensor. Of course, during the existence of the monument, a lot of “scars” appeared on it from lightning, winds and other natural phenomena. However, this image, as before, shocks the eye of any beholder, leaving no one indifferent.
At the foot of the Motherland is the Hall of Military Glory. It is a cylindrical structure where rallies are held every year. The walls of the hall, lined with brilliant golden-scarlet mosaics, are decorated with slabs stylized as banners. They are engraved with the names of 7,000 fighters who defended the city. The center of the composition is a giant hand holding a torch with a lit eternal flame. Daylight enters the hall through a huge round opening in the ceiling, the diameter of which reaches 11 meters. And the entrance to the hall is guarded by the Guard of Honor, which is replaced every hour.
Anyone who loves their country and reveres its history should visit this place, but if there is no way to go there yet, Volgograd webcams will allow you to take a virtual walk through the heroic places.
