The first mention of the settlement dates back to the period of the Roman Empire, when in these parts at the end of the 1st century. n. e. military camp was located. Then the settlement was called Skupi. After an earthquake that occurred in the 6th century, the Byzantine emperor Justinian I renamed it Prima Justiniana. At the same time, local residents continued to call the city by its former name, and with the arrival of the Slavs, Skupi was transformed into Skopje.

To get to know the capital better, you need to go to the City Museum.

Webcams Skopje to watch online which you can on the site will also provide an opportunity to stroll through the streets of the capital. The City Museum was founded in 1949. In 1970, it was located in the adapted part of the old railway station with an area of 4500 sq.m, of which 2000 sq.m. m. occupy exhibition space.
Since then and to this day, it has not only acted as a museum, but also a center that unites activities in the field of archeology, history, ethnology, art history of the region. In addition to systematic research, collection, organization, protection and preservation of exhibits, expert processing and scientific study of museum materials is also carried out here. Then they are publicly presented as part of thematic projects and exhibitions both domestically and abroad.
Today, the museum's fund includes 21,950 items, divided into four departments: archeology, history, ethnology and art history. A Walk Through the Past is a permanent exhibition that covers the period from prehistoric times to the beginning of the 20th century.
One of the departments of the museum complex is the open graphic studio "MAK-GRAF", founded in 1994 and having an international character. It is a space for constant contact between artists and the public, where graphic artists can create and exhibit their work. Also, the branches of the institution are located in the Skopje Old Bazaar, and in the Suli An quarter there is a permanent exhibition "The History of the Skopje Old Bazaar".
By the way, the main attraction of the capital is the Old Bazaar.

Skopje webcams can be watched online to see the ancient architecture.

It is the largest market in the Balkans outside of Istanbul. It is located on the eastern bank of the Vardar River, stretching from the Stone Bridge to Bit Pazar and from the Skopje Fortress to the Serava River.
The Old Bazaar is a protected national landmark. The earliest known documentary sources that indicate the existence of a trading quarter here date back to the 12th century. During the Ottoman rule, this place underwent rapid development. Therefore, it became the main economic and commercial center of the city, as evidenced by almost 30 mosques, numerous caravanserais and hanses, as well as other Ottoman buildings and monuments.
The bazaar was badly damaged by the earthquakes that occurred in 1555 and 1963 and the destruction caused by the world wars. Subsequently, it was reconstructed several times and currently represents the only remaining cultural monument in the Republic of North Macedonia, which has preserved its multicultural heritage of various civilizations.
Ottoman architecture dominates the Old Bazaar, although remnants of Byzantine architecture are also evident, while the most recent renovations result in the application of modern elements. Most of the buildings that were once used to house travelers or as hammams for political dignitaries have been converted into museums and galleries.
Another symbol of the capital is the Stone Bridge. It is located in the very heart of the city. The structure was built across the local river Vardar. It connects the main square with the Old Bazaar. The passage consists of stone blocks and is supported by strong columns, which are connected by 12 semicircular arcs. The bridge is 214 meters long and 6 meters wide.
The modern Stone Bridge was built on Roman foundations. This happened during the Ottoman period under the leadership of Sultan Mehmed II. Historical records that have survived to this day indicate that the building was once damaged by a large earthquake in 1555. Then it was badly damaged, but restoration work began in the same year.
The bridge is remarkable not only for its architecture, but also for some historical events. So, executions sometimes took place here. In addition, in 1944, the Nazis planted explosives here. Literally at the last minute, at the request of the city's nobility, it was possible to save the bridge from imminent destruction.
The last reconstruction of the bridge was in 1994 and lasted almost 7 years. During this period, it was not allowed to cross the structure, which for many craftsmen from the nearby Old Bazaar led to negative economic consequences.
