Freedom square (Maidan freedom in Ukrainian) is the main in Kharkov. Here are regularly held various citywide events: fairs, meetings, concerts. The area has an unusual shape. It consists of two parts: the Western (rounded with a small square in the center) and the Eastern rectangular. At the time of the city, the architects proposed the formation of not one but two areas, separated by a flower bed or a fountain. However, this idea was abandoned, and instead of the fountain in 1963, grew an impressive monument to Vladimir Lenin. Almost the entire perimeter of the area occupied an important and valuable architectural buildings. On the South side it is adjacent to the Park named after Taras Shevchenko (formerly the City garden).
