The "mineral city" of Apatity is considered an important industrial and scientific center of the Arctic.
Unique types of ores and rocks are mined here, research work is carried out and there is even its own Akademgorodok.
Despite the fact that the city is quite new, there are already many attractions that are worth seeing.
Much attention is paid to history in Apatity. There is a historical museum dedicated to the development of the North, with huge collections of unique exhibits, works of art and ancient artifacts.
There are also many monumental monuments in Apatity.
So, for example, at the intersection of Fersman and Moskovskaya streets, a monument to the First Builders rises. It was opened after Apatity acquired the status of a city, and is a large stele with high reliefs depicting the builders of the city. The monument was erected in memory of the people who were the first to work in these places in very difficult conditions. After all, Apatity was built in the middle of the wild tundra.
There are also monuments to prominent personalities in the city. For example, a bust of Alexander Fersman, an outstanding scientist, geochemist and writer of the USSR. This man, even as a child, was interested in stones, and after graduating from school he became a geologist. Fersman was the organizer and participant of many geological expeditions, made many important discoveries and created several catalogs of minerals, including children's manuals.
Thanks to the expeditions of the academician, many mineral deposits were discovered on the Kola Peninsula, including apatites, which gave the city its name. The monument to the scientist adorns the street of the same name near the building of the Mining Institute. It is a sculptural image of Alexander Evgenevich, mounted on a high pedestal of Karelian granite.
An unusual monument is the GAZ-21. The rare Pobeda, painted in the colors of USSR police cars, has been standing near the building of the Intermunicipal Department of Internal Affairs since 2009.
There is also a monument to the heroes of the Second World War in Apatity. It consists of three granite bayonets connected at the top with a St. George ribbon, which depicts the coat of arms of the USSR and the numbers of the beginning and end of the Great Patriotic War. You can see the monument in the Square to Participants and Veterans of the Great Patriotic War on Lenin Square.
If, for now, visiting these parts is not included in the plans, Apatity webcams will allow you to get acquainted with this distant city and, possibly, determine the route for the next trip.
