Apatity, whose webcams can be viewed online on this site, is one of the few cities that are located and are developing well beyond the Arctic Circle.
In terms of the number of inhabitants among the settlements of the Arctic, Apatity is in fifth place. It is loved for its beautiful nature near the White River and the Khibiny, picturesque lakes and many cultural attractions.
Along with the city itself, the Apatit district includes the Khibiny railway station, as well as the station settlement Tik-Guba. It was here in the middle of the last century that the first airfield on the Kola Peninsula was built, which also included a hydrostrip created on Lake Imandra. Today, an important railway line passes through this area in the direction to Murmansk.
The city owes its name to the valuable mineral apatite, which is mined in the vicinity. Along with this mineral, nepheline ores are mined here, after the discovery of which a working settlement was founded.
Until that time, on the site of a large developed city there was only a small junction, which bore the name of the Belaya River. Later, the Apatity-1 railway station appeared on this site, which exists to this day. And the village acquired the status of a city only after the Second World War.
The Great Patriotic War became one of the most difficult trials in the life of the city and the entire Kola Peninsula. Indeed, with the outbreak of hostilities, the territory was cut off from the "mainland". Therefore, the trapped inhabitants of the Arctic began to produce everything they needed to survive. At that time, the Industry state farm was one of the largest suppliers of provisions. Residents themselves were actively growing vegetable crops in their private gardens.
After the village of Apatity became a city, its population constantly increased in number. By the end of the 80s, the highest figure of 88 thousand people was recorded here. But with the collapse of the USSR, there was a strong outflow of local residents. Nowadays, about 55 thousand citizens live here, which puts the city on the 300th place in the TOP of Russian cities in terms of population.
If, for the time being, it is not possible to go to the Arctic, either on a permanent basis or as tourists, you can see how this distant city lives if you watch Apatit webcams online.
