The virgin Mary Cathedral was built in the XIII century and during its history has seen many trials. So, after a couple of decades after the consecration, the structure was literally burned to the ground by fire. During the construction of the new building, the Church purchased a larger size and Gothic features. After the second fire, in the middle of the XIX century, during which affected almost the entire city, the Church acquired a high tower. And he Turku, thanks to the efforts of prominent Finnish architects Engel and Gulia received a completely new urban concept. The streets of the city ceased to be a confusing maze, and got a magnificent architectural ensembles, residential, academic and administrative buildings that have survived to this day.
