Kingisepp town (from 1784) in Russia, the administrative center of Kingiseppsky district of Leningrad region and municipal formation Kingisepp urban settlement. Located on the Luga river, 130 km from St. Petersburg. Founded by the Novgorod boyar Ivan Fedorovich as a fortress of Yam in 1384. From 1703 to 1922 the city was called Yamburg, then was renamed in honor of the Estonian revolutionary Victor Kingisepp (in 1952 Kingisepp was also named the town of Kuressaare in the Estonian SSR restored to its old name in 1988).
