Suoyarvi, whose webcams can be viewed online on this site, is a picturesque city in the Republic of Karelia, which, although not a popular tourist center, will delight travelers with beautiful nature and the ability to quickly get to the famous Karelian sights.
About 10 thousand people live in the city, which is over 50% of all residents of the district. Suojärvi owes its name to the Finnish expression "marsh lake". Indeed, the city is located on the shore of a reservoir, which is called exactly the same.
Suoyarvi has a long history. The first people came to these lands in the XIV century. Documentary mention of the area began at the beginning of the 16th century. In those days, the village of Kaipaa was located on the site of the present Suojärvi. In the same period, the settlement became part of the Vodskaya Pyatina of the Novgorod land. The area was called "Shuretsky churchyard". However, after the Russian-Swedish battles, for some time Kaipaa belonged to the Swedish crown. This continued until the end of the Northern War, as a result of which these lands returned to the Vyborg province of the Russian Empire.
Like many local territories, the land in the vicinity of Suojärvi is rich in minerals. So in the 18th century, high-quality ore was mined here, which was considered the best in the region. And at the beginning of the 19th century, an iron-smelting plant was built here. During the Napoleonic War, Suojärvi, along with the surrounding area, passed to Finland. And after gaining independence, the USSR lost these territories for a very long period.
In the Finnish period, a cardboard factory was built on the territory of Suojärvi, as well as a timber processing enterprise. According to the results of the Soviet-Finnish battles, the territory was again returned to the USSR. However, with the outbreak of World War II, Finland occupied these lands until July 1944.
Today, this small but historically interesting town will delight visitors with various sights, architectural monuments of the early 20th century. And, of course, do not forget about the miraculous beauties that the region is famous for.
If the trip to Karelia is postponed for the time being, Suojärvi webcams will allow you to take an interesting virtual walk through the little-known places of the republic.
