Kalkan is one of the most picturesque resorts on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Despite the absence of a large number of cultural attractions, the local ancient architecture, combined with the wonderful nature and mild climate, will make your vacation in Kalkan memorable and full of pleasant impressions.
There are no sights known throughout the country in the city itself. But there is an interesting feature here - the local authorities carefully take care of the historical buildings that have arisen here since ancient times. So, for example, there is a certain architectural "dress code" on the basis of which, in the city it is prohibited to erect buildings that exceed the height of historical buildings. Also, the buildings should be kept in the same style, which makes the appearance of the city harmonious and colorful.
There are several historical settlements in the vicinity of Kalkan. The first of them - Xanthos, is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Once it was the capital of the Lycian state, in which the remains of the theater and tombs have survived to this day, the oldest of which date back to the 6th-5th century BC.
The second settlement, Letoon, was once an important religious center of Lycia. Today, hundreds of tourists come here who want to inspect the remains of a theater with a covered gallery, a Roman tomb, and Byzantine temples found here.
Another ancient settlement - Patara, in the era of the Lycian state was the most important port center. Also, this city is considered the birthplace of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The scale of this place is evidenced by stone arches, ancient baths, theater, city council and warehouse.
Another place worth visiting from Kalkan is Kekova Island. Today, there are also several tombs and a theater preserved here. An excursion to the island can be combined with a visit to the city of Mira, which is also associated with the name of St. Nicholas, who served here as a bishop and was buried after his death.
From the city of Kas, which is adjacent to Kalkan, you can visit the Greek island of Meis. But only holders of a Schengen visa can get here.
You should definitely visit Pamukkale and Cappadocia, where you can see simply magical landscapes, as well as explore ancient ruins and unique natural attractions from a bird's eye view, taking a trip in a hot air balloon.
