Brussels was told by legend that Saint Gorik was founded in the 6th century, but this date is officially dated 979, when the remains of Saint Gudula, who is considered the patron saint of Belgium, were moved to the chapel built by the Duke of Lower Lorraine Charles on the banks of the Senna Chapel. In the 11th century, the first walls of the city were built around the city.
During the Middle Ages and New Time, the city managed to visit part of different states and in different statuses. Thus, in 1430 Brussels was turned into the capital of Burgundy. Then for several centuries the city was under the rule of the Habsburg dynasty, and after the end of the Napoleonic wars briefly remained part of the Dutch kingdom, until finally in Brussels in 1830 began the Belgian Revolution. A year later it led to the creation of the Belgian kingdom with a constitutional monarchy and King Leopold I on the throne.
Since then, the city has developed steadily, having experienced a real industrial boom in the second half of the 19th century. At the same time, most of the city's remarkable buildings are being built in the Art Nouveau style. During the World Wars, the city was not too affected, and after the end of World War II took on a new function - the center of European and world diplomacy. It was in Brussels that the headquarters of the EEC were located in 1958 and NATO in 1967.
