There are many museums that tell about the aspects of life in the archipelago. Among them, the Monte Palace Museum is considered to be the most popular. It is located in a tropical garden. It houses two permanent exhibitions: a collection of minerals and modern sculptures of Zimbabwe.
In the XVIII century. the English consul Charles Murray bought a property south of the Monte church and turned it into a beautiful estate called "Quinta do Prazer".
The estate was then acquired in 1897 by Alfredo Guilherme Rodríguez and, inspired by the palaces he saw on the banks of the Rhine River, he built a house with the characteristics of these monumental buildings. Later, already in the 19th century, it was transformed into a hotel called Monte Palace Hotel.
This hotel has been visited by important nationals and foreigners who have enjoyed this beautiful resort with its breathtaking views of Funchal and the surrounding natural landscape. In 1943, Alfredo Guilherme Rodriguez died. The family did not take up his project, which led to the closure of the hotel and the transfer into the hands of a financial institution. In 1987, the building was sold to a businessman who donated it to a foundation. Thus Monte Palace was born in Madeira. Live webcams make it possible to walk around the island.
The tropical garden at the museum itself is rich in local exotic plants from around the world, as well as local species from the Laurel forest (ferns, cedars, laurels, etc.). In addition, there are many small architectural forms in the garden in the form of sculptures, niches, pagodas, and other elements of various cultures and eras. One of the most beautiful is the collection of tiles, consisting of 166 glazed terracotta elements called "The Adventure of the Portuguese in Japan".
In Madeira, whose webcams are available on the site in real time, the History Center is located.
It is located in the Old Town of Funchal and tells about the past of the island in an interactive way. It was founded in 2005. The exhibition space is organized in chronological order with the following themes: volcanic origin, legends, discovery and development of Madeira, unrest and trade, strategic island.
