El Medano is a picturesque resort town on the island of Tenerife, part of the Canary archipelago and washed by the Atlantic Ocean. Administratively, the city belongs to the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. It is only 7 km away from the southern airport. And from the most popular resort on the island of Las Americas - 22 km.
The name of the city in translation from Spanish means "sand dune"
It huddles in a small bay next to the extinct volcano Montaña Roja, which meets tourists literally at the airport.
The name of the volcano is translated as Red Mountain. It was not given to the top by chance. In the rays of the setting sun, its shades range from bright scarlet to burgundy.
These places are characterized by strong winds. Therefore, El Medano has long been chosen by surfers. The local beach is considered one of the best locations for this sport in the world. Therefore, here you can see surfers from all over Europe and other countries.
In the old days, international competitions were held here. Today, here you can see both beginners who are on the board for the first time and professional athletes.
For surfers on the beach, there are equipment rental points, as well as surf centers where, under the guidance of experienced instructors, you can quickly learn the basics of sports. You can even find Russian-speaking trainers on the territory of the largest hotels.
El Medano has a relatively calm environment
There is no huge crowd of tourists here, and the locals are very friendly to guests. Therefore, if any difficulties arise, for example, with the search for various locations, you can always count on help. Even for those who do not speak Spanish, the essence of the conversation can be easily understood by the sign language, which the local population is fluent in. Many of the islanders can even guide you to your destination.
El Medano is located along the largest natural beaches on the island. The city beach Playa el Medano stretches along the coast for 1.3 km. Its width reaches 40 meters, and the territory has an unusual shape. On the one hand, it borders on city streets. And on the opposite side - with an extinct volcano. Experts believe that this beach was formed by African winds.
Those who prefer to use the beach infrastructure are relaxing on the “urban” side of Playa el Médano. Windsurfers prefer the opposite part of the coast.
