Sakhalin regional Museum is one of the oldest research and educational institutions of culture of the Sakhalin region. It was founded in 1896, the military Governor of Sakhalin island by V. D. Merkezinin. The Museum is housed in a Japanese building from 1937, built in traditional Japanese architectural style "taken-zukuri" – "Imperial crown" and is the only of its kind both in the territory of Sakhalin and the whole of Russia. Annually the Museum is visited by about 70 thousand inhabitants and visitors of the Sakhalin oblast. It stores more than 200 thousand items and collections on the nature, history and cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation. The Sakhalin regional Museum is known in many countries of the world. Over the last 20 years the Museum has become a major scientific center of the Far East, not only among the museums of the region and among academic institutions.
