The main object and backbone enterprise of Kotovsk is still a gunpowder factory.

The history of the emergence of this enterprise goes back to the distant 1913. The Military Council of the Main Artillery Directorate began to consider the issue of building a new gunpowder factory. His decision dragged on for a whole year, and only at the beginning of the First World War did they start laying the foundation for an enterprise 18 versts from Tambov. Before construction began here, there was a forest on the territory of the modern plant.
For the construction of the plant, unskilled workers were recruited from among local residents. Basically, these were peasants from the villages of Bokino, Lipovitsa, Sukhotinka, Kuzmino-Gat. The longer the construction lasted, the stronger the understanding that people with the appropriate qualifications were needed. Therefore, an announcement was published in one of the Moscow newspapers, thanks to which specialists from different regions of the Russian Empire began to visit the construction of a new enterprise. By the end of November 1914, almost 2 thousand people took part in the construction. Moreover, representatives of different nationalities worked, including prisoners of war Austrians, Czechs, Germans.
Already in 1915, the gunpowder factory began its work, although construction was still ongoing. Until 1917, the territory was replenished with workshops, outbuildings, a chemical laboratory, power and water-lifting stations, and other premises. In total there were about 70 objects. The first batches of gunpowder were released on September 1, 1916.
Since 1917, for 11 years, the plant actually did not work. Moreover, a lot of valuable equipment and machinery was taken out of here. The revival began after the establishment of Soviet power. In 1927, production was organized here, which allowed the production of oil engines, machine casting, and wool combs to begin. Before the start of the Great Patriotic War, new workshops appeared at the plant, and the production of new types of products started. Production volumes grew rapidly, as well as the number of employees, which amounted to about 8 thousand people.
Since the beginning of the war, mostly women and teenagers worked at the plant, because. almost all the men went to the front. Trained on the job, right at the workplace by the method of instruction. At that time, the fair half were taught the skills of such professions as a locksmith, turner, electrician, etc. By 1942, 60-65 tons of gunpowder were produced here per day. In addition, the company produced ammunition.
After the end of the war, the gunpowder factory began to produce civilian products. In 1946, they organized the production of corn threshers, a year later - spectacle frames, and on the basis of a sewing workshop they began to make special clothes for workers of various enterprises. During this period, more than 5 thousand people worked at the plant.
The plant has developed year by year. For example, in the 1960s, the production of celluloid products increased, which were exported to Czechoslovakia, Romania, Austria, Denmark, Turkey, Ghana, and Libya. In the 70s of the last century, the enterprise produced 61 items. Now it is one of the largest industrial enterprises that produces ammunition and special chemicals. It also produces lacquers, enamels and 25 types of tumbler toys.
