The oldest castle in Slovenia is Predjama, built in the Middle Ages. Predjama Castle is a national symbol and a museum institution, considered one of the most beautiful buildings of this period throughout the country. In addition, Predjama is a unique and largest cave castle on the planet. This facility attracts thousands of tourists every year.
The castle is located near the town of Postojna, among the picturesque surroundings of the village of Predjama, which gave the name to the object. To get here, you must first come to Postojna, and then go to the castle as part of one of the excursions. Some programs cover not only the castle, but also the interesting Postojna Yama karst cave. The best time to visit the cave is mid to late summer. At the same time, a free transfer is organized to the castle, the duration of which is less than half an hour.
The castle, whose age is estimated at 8 centuries, at different periods of its history was in the property of noble families. In the annals of Predjama Castle, the most memorable was the period of possession of these lands by Baron Erasmus Yamsky, who lived here in the 15th century.
During the siege of the city by Roman troops, the baron heroically withstood the battle, which lasted more than 6 months. But then he was betrayed by one of his subordinates and died. After that, the castle passed into the ownership of the kingdom, and was later bought by a wealthy family.
The building is a five-story fortress, to which the elements of the palace were later added. The building was often undergoing restoration work due to constant attacks and natural disasters. The strongest damage to the castle was caused by one of the earthquakes.
In the form in which the castle appears to tourists today, it was built in the second half of the 16th century in the Renaissance style.
The building is embedded in a natural rock, at a height of 100 meters at the foot of which a river flows. There is an old cave near the castle, which gives these places mysticism. The entrance to the cave is covered with castle walls. By the way, the name Predyama literally translates as "in front of the cave."
Today, within the walls of the castle, there is a museum, which houses an amazing collection of ancient weapons, clothing, utensils, and works of fine art. It will be interesting to visit the cave, with its mysterious labyrinths and underground lakes.
The castle has several interesting rooms. This is a torture room with an exhibition of medieval interrogation instruments, a bedroom, a dining room, a prayer room, a terrace, and museum rooms.
