Madrid is an amazing, unique, in some places mysterious city. Its appearance is somewhat reminiscent of seaside resorts. The reason for this lies in the atmospheric, narrow streets, palm trees hanging over them, and hot weather. However, there is no sea here. Although this is fully compensated by the abundance of unique sights of Madrid, which can surprise even experienced travelers. For some, this city can give the impression of a large Spanish village. However, if you turn off the central streets, you can plunge into the indescribable atmosphere of cozy courtyards, fragrant flower beds and other locations inconspicuous to the naked eye.
Of course, it is unrealistic to see all the sights of Madrid in one day. But there is a list of must-see locations that can be covered within a short weekend.
You can start your acquaintance with the city from the Retiro Park. This is a large, central park, where cleanliness and tranquility always reign. The area of the park is 125 hectares. The location was founded in the 17th century. It was here that King Philip IV loved to rest with his retinue.
Unfortunately, the park was badly damaged during the war with Napoleonic France. But, thanks to the efforts of restorers, artists and gardeners, today this park is again one of the most beautiful corners of the city. Wide shady alleys are decorated with fountains, monuments, sculptures and flower beds. The park includes several garden ensembles designed by such prominent architects as Sasilio Rodriguez and Herrero Palacios.
The park also houses the famous crystal palace, which was built by analogy with the London one in the second half of the 19th century. The building is a unique architectural monument, almost entirely made of glass. It was built to host a major exhibition of flora and fauna of the Philippine Islands, which at that time belonged to Spain. Today the palace, as well as centuries ago, is used for all kinds of exhibitions.
The TOP 20 most popular museums in the world include the Prado in Madrid. Every year, about 3 million visitors come to see its exposition. Like many European museums, the Prado was created from the private collections of the country's ruling dynasties. Today, within the walls of the museum, you can see the creations of such famous masters as Velazquez, El Greco, Goya, Titian, Bosch and many others. The collection of the museum is considered one of the most valuable in the world. The Prado itself is considered one of the outstanding cultural attractions of the city and country.
