In accordance with the agreement signed between China and Portugal on 13 April 1987 (ratified in January 1988), Macau was granted the status of special administrative region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China, which was officially adopted on 20 December 1999. China guaranteed the free economic status of the territory of Macau by declaring the slogan "One Country, Two Systems", which allowed Macau citizens to maintain a high degree of autonomy in all matters except international relations and defence for the next 50 years.
