To your attention, an online webcam with a view of the aviary with Orangutanomi in the Novosibirsk Zoo named after R. A. Shilo. Orangutans are humanoid apes that belong to the pongin family, an order of primates. The animal genome is very close to the human genome.
Monkeys have a very expressive face, they are generally not hostile and calm, but their habitat is now shrinking due to the influence of human agricultural activities. This species is the last of its subfamily, but it used to include Sivapithecus and Gigantopithecus. Scientists are still arguing about the origin of the animals. Some believe that they are relatives of the sivapithecus, because the remains of these monkeys that were found in Hindustan, have similar features to the skeleton of orangutans. Other experts are convinced that this species originated from corapithecus, which used to live in Indochina.
Carl Linnaeus, a well-known biologist, wrote The Origin of Species in the 18th century, where the Kalimantan orangutans received a detailed description. The Sumatran ones were described by another scientist, Rene Lesson. Interestingly, these animals were previously referred to the same species. At the end of the 20th century, a new species was found, which was called the Tapanul orangutan, but it was recognized only in 2017. Individuals live on the territory of the island of Sumatra.
Where it lives
These animals usually live in wetlands in the tropics. There is always a dense forest, which is important, because orangutans are in the trees almost constantly. In the past, these monkeys could be found in Southeast Asia, but now they live only in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
The Kalimantan subspecies is much more common than the others, they can be seen in the north of the island. The Sumarthans also occupy this territory, while the Tapanuls prefer to isolate themselves from other subspecies in Batang Toru. Their habitat is very small-less than a thousand kilometers squared.
Animals never like to climb down from trees, so they often use creepers to move around in the trees. Orangutans also do not like water and do not visit the watering hole, because they get everything they need with food and drink moisture from the hollows.
